Neville Hobson is a UK-based social strategist, communicator, writer, and podcaster with a significant presence in the digital and social media landscape. His career spans several decades, during which he has been deeply involved in the evolution of digital communication, social media, and podcasting.

Hobson’s work focuses on consulting with organizations to help them create and build foundations for authentic engagement, reach, and influence. He has significant experience working with enterprise businesses and clients, notably in a global role from 2018 to 2020 working as Director of Digital Marketing and the Social Media Strategist at the Internet Society, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, and Geneva, Switzerland; and serving as a Senior Managing Consultant at IBM in the UK from 2016 to 2017 where he led a team developing mobile apps for enterprise clients’ change management programmes.

His influence extends beyond his consulting work. He has been an award-winning blogger since starting in 2002 and a pioneering podcaster since 2005. His early adoption and experimentation with social media platforms, virtual worlds, and artificial intelligence, especially generative AI, have made him a notable figure in the digital communication field. He is a Founding Fellow of the Society for New Communications Research (SNCR) and was an accredited member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for nearly 20 years.

Hobson has contributed to digital and social media discourse over the past 25 years through various platforms, especially podcasts. With Shel Holtz, he co-founded the ‘For Immediate Release’ podcast in 2005; as co-host, he discusses trends, behaviours, and practices in digital and social communication in long-form monthly episodes and shorter mid-week episodes. In 2016, with Sam Knowles and Thomas Stoeckle, he co-founded ‘The Small Data Forum Podcast’ where the three co-hosts (dubbed ‘The Podnosticators’) take a sideways look each month at the uses and abuses of data big and small in politics, business, and public life with opinion and insights that challenge accepted wisdom. The show was retired in February 2024.

In May 2022, he took on the key role of host for season 2 of ‘Ideas to Innovation’, a business podcast from Clarivate that tells stories capturing the emotion and vision of remarkable people who have been on journeys to find creative solutions to the toughest of challenges. He continued this role with season 3, from September 2023.

From 2014 to 2015, he provided commentary on technology topics in live broadcasts on Share Radio UK, a digital radio station in London. From 2007 to 2010, he worked with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in the UK, creating and delivering ongoing professional development training workshops called “New Media for Old Hands,” designed to provide senior-level practitioners with the knowledge and confidence to embrace social media.

His contributions to business literature include co-authoring “How To Do Everything With Podcasting” with Shel Holtz, published by McGraw-Hill in 2007, and contributing the introductory chapter to “The Social Media MBA,” published by Wiley in 2012. Since 2012, he has been a judge for a number of professional awards contests, including the UK Digital PR Awards and the UK Social Media Awards.

Living near Newbury, England, about 50 miles west of London, Hobson continues to engage with and influence the digital and social media landscape through his work and online activities. His career and contributions reflect a deep commitment to understanding and shaping the ways organizations and individuals communicate in the digital age.
