Every year, PR software and services company Cision (which was acquired by Vuelio in June 2015) publishes a ranking of what it considers to be the top ten PR blogs in the UK.

Last week, the latest list for 2015 was published and I’m pleased to note this this blog is ranked by Vuelio as the number 1 PR blog in the UK for the fourth year running.

Ranking lists of bloggers is often viewed with some cynicism, whether they’re of PRs, rose-growers or rocket scientists. They’re seen by some people as vanity lists, not worth the pixels in which they display on your screen. While some criticism I see are from people who don’t appear in a given list, there is some validity to some criticisms: much depends on who’s produced a list and why.

Two questions to ask are “What’s the methodology?” and “How has the ranking ultimately been determined?”

Here’s what Vuelio says about theirs:

Vuelio uses a proprietary algorithm to rank all the media in our database. For the rankings, we put (usually) the ten most influential blogs in order, after the automated results have been carefully reviewed by our team of in-house researchers. The methodology takes into consideration a number of factors including social sharing, topic-related content, post frequency, social media influence, traffic, design and interactivity.

So they have some secret sauce to help them decide. I’m okay with knowing no more than that, mostly because they’re a credible business and I know the people there. And so I have a little badge from Vuelio in the sidebar on my blog that links to their list.

Of the many lists that rank bloggers that appear from time to time that include my blog, Cision’s (now Vuelio’s) list is the one that I give most attention and credence to.

Why? Because the page on Vuelio’s website that has the listing is consistently among the top five referrers of traffic to my blog over the long term. It’s been that way since 2010.
