Finding a new theme

It’s time to think hard about changing the theme of NevilleHobson.com, my primary blog.

I’ve been using the K2 theme ever since I first discovered WordPress in 2005. I like it’s appearance and its functionality.

What I don’t like - and don’t think I want to deal with any longer - is what seems to be a major flaw in how my blog renders in any browser other than Firefox if I use K2.

I’m pretty disappointed with the lack of responsiveness by anyone in the K2 Forum to posts for comments or any kind of advice that would help me figure out how to fix the problem.

Plus it looks like K2 (and hence, users) will have problems with WordPress when WP version 2.1 comes out, as this comment in a forum thread indicates:

[…] But not to keep it as a secret, there will be trouble for K2 when WP 2.1 get final.

So I’m going to find an alternative theme.

First candidate - Cutline by Chris Pearson.

My quick test - displaying this in Firefox 2 and in Internet Explorer 7 - shows that everything looks and behaves as it should in both browsers. Definitely not the case with K2.

Hey Neville. Just found this blog - what a good idea! I always try out new themes etc on my own blog every time, which I guess isn’t good for consistency.

The thing with switching themes for me is not just the effort in choosing one that works for you, but all the donkey work of putting all your little customisations and hacks back in. Some plug-ins don’t work with all themes as well, which is a pain.

Agree on the K2 thing, it has always struck me as being a little too clever for its own good!

This theme is nice, pretty simple. Some I like that I have seen recently include WuCoco - which comes in one and two column flavours. Two simple ones: 281 and Veryplaintext.

Sandbox is very minimalist, but kinda cool.

Am sure you are aware of it, but just in case you aren’t, the place to go is the Wordpress theme viewer.
