Shades of grey

Chip Griffin has a terrific post on Media Bullseye urging us to throw out the social media rulebook:

Far too many of my colleagues who share a passion for the social media space treat this new media world more as a religion than as an art. Attending conferences, reading blogs, listening to podcasts, and talking at meetups will reveal rule after rule that many think cannot be broken in order for an activity to qualify as legitimate and successful.

I’m here to tell you that most of the rules are bunk, and we as an industry [do] ourselves a disservice by frightening off potential participants with absurd proclamations of the way things must be.

Chip then lists nine rules that, he says, make little sense.

I agree with Chip that we must ditch such rigid rules. In any event, things are rarely so black and white but instead come in shades of grey.

Chip’s post is beginning to attract some thoughtful commentary, not simply agree/disagree but offering extended points of view.

With that in mind, I offer here my own penny’s worth of contribution to the conversation.

If you use seesmic, why not extend the audiovisual conversation further?
